is the president talking about this matter earlier today. >> obama: as soon as i'm finished speaking here, i will sit at that desk and sign a directive giving schools hubble health community tools they need to help reduce gun violence. as important as these steps are they are in no way a substitute for action from members of congress. to make a reel and lasting real and lasting difference congress, too must act, and i'm calling on congress to pass very specific proposals right away. first its time for congress to require an universal background check for anyone trying to buy a gun. second, congress should restore a ban on military style assault weapons and a ten-round limit for magazines. finally congress needs to help rather than hinder law enforcement as it does its job. we should get tougher on people who buy guns with the express purpose of turning around and selling them to criminals. and we should severely punish anybody who helps them do this. this will be difficult. there will be pundits and politicians and special interest lobbyists publicly warning of a tyrannical all-out assault o

with the headline saying that he could slow down obama's efforts on gun control. have the two of you talked about any sort of compromise legislation? guest: we've had some good conversations in terms of the leadup to this new congress. he called to congratulate me, and he and i have had some discussions about different things that we might work together on, but we have not specifically spoken about gun issues. host: immigration reform? guest: we have not talked about immigration reform in the broader sense and my predecessor, lamar smith, had extensive discussions with regard to the legislation that the house passed at the end of the last congress in december to address a program that i've been trying to eliminate for many years called the visa lottery or visa diversity program. 55,000 green cards given away not based on family reunification or job skills that are needed in the united states but based on pure luck. that was then tied to a program to encourage people who attend u.s. universities with science, technology, engineering and mathematics backgrounds to stay in the u.s., use those skills

[ applause ] >> that was president obama outlining a raft of legislations, proposals, and executive actions he intends to take to curb gun violence in this country. karen, let's talk about what the president just outlined there. we know he signed several executive actions, he signed several executive actions. among them, strengthening background checks, the ability of federal agencies to share information. also, perhaps long overdue, pushing forward a nomination of todd jones to be head of the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, and firearms. there's not been a director in six years. he also outlined, not a huge surprise, we've been talking about a lot of these measures in recent days, several new things he'd like congress to take action on, including universal background checks, the assault weapons ban he is going forward with, and a ban on high-capacity magazine clips, and a crackdown on gun trafficking, which has less to do, perhaps, with newtown, and more to do with the increased gun violence that we saw in intercities across the country.

president obama has been president is the continual -- a concerted effort to compare himself to president lincoln, a first in his talking about the book that he was reading -- i cannot remember the title of it -- >> king of rivals? caller: now he is taking the inauguration on the lincoln bauble. there is an idea that some callers have made that this president has faced worst consequences or worse situations than previous presidents i think is somewhat absurd. the fact that he is half-black, there is nothing to it. he is the president of united states and is supposed to be president of everybody. unfortunately, i have lost confidence in the politicians in washington, d.c. and i think the people of the united states should continually boat these people out of office on a regular basis until they start doing what they're supposed to do which is represent the people of the united states. we have a democratically elected republic and people need to pull out their history books and find out what that is and realize that when we send them to office, would give them the authority to vote the way

is proposing would have stopped the massacre at sandy hook. president obama is targeting the rights of law-abiding citizens instead of what caused the violence. that is a very strong response from someone who's talked about as a 2016 potential candidate. >> and he also accused the president of abusing his executive power in the 23 actions. when you read the 23 actions, frankly, these are very weak directives. there's not much more the white house could do. they've got a whole bunch of things out there, but to call it an overreach is a big, big stretch there. but you're right, andrea, that's presidential politics. the most important responses, though, on this front have come from the two people in charge of putting legislation on the floor of the house and the senate. and speaker boehner's spokesperson said we'll be happy to look at any proposals that pass the senate. well, what did harry reid say last weekend about voting on any bills having to do with gun legislation? they are not going to vote on anything unless they know it can pass the house. here we are, stalemate. >> exactly. >> back

president and certainly president obama with their strength of the office and going around the country and talking to americans which basically agree with the president, it's going to be up to the people across the country to talk to their members of congress to make sure that we and get this done. this can save lives. we've saw that. when the large magazine clips, which i've been reintroducing ever since 204, when that ban was in place, we did not see these magazines out on the streets. and they were very expensive because they were rare. we can do that again to cut that down. we're not going to be taking away anyone's right to own a gun. the supreme court already did that. but with the president laying out what he did, in a very holistic way, by the way, by working with our schools, making sure we have community policing, have psychologists. it's going to be up to the schools to make the decision on what they want, but we should be there to help them. ifwe can't protect our children from school or someone going to the movies, i think that has hit the heart of everybody in this countr
